I dont give to my kids. Topical decongestants: (afrin and its cousins) VERY effective, but you have to use *more aggressively* than on the label. I cant officially condone that ; ), but do that myself Dextromorphan: good for cough. Makes sleepy. Good at night. Benadryl: makes sleepy, sometimes irritable. I dont use much. For seasonal allergies, see if you can score second generation allergy meds that are OTC (zyrtec, etc.). I dont know if kids can take these. Combo meds (tylenol PM) are a scam. Discrete generics are cheaper and just as effective, IMHO. They will show you some brands. Pseudoephedrine effectively dries up a runny nose and relieves congestion. This does however make your child drowsy/sleepy. I've spent soo much money between doctor co-pays & filling perscriptions that I began asking my doctor if there are any OTC medications for the common cold/allergy. My dr. said sure I'd have to read over the symptoms carefully & find what would best suit my children. Should they get a fever or symptoms get worse of course I'd head to the dr. immediatly. I'm just curious if anyone with children can recommend a good OTC children's medication for runny/stuffy nose, slight congestion & nagging tickling cough? what is the best OTC children's medication for cold & allergy relief?
