I know that organizations like the Red Cross get a discount for buying supplies like water and food. I’m looking for specific numbers.
Nope. Not at all skeptical. I’m doing a presentation to my Economics classes about relief to Haiti and want to talk about what trade-offs they would be willing to make to donate. For example, would they be willing to give up one $1 bag of hot cheetos if that $1 could be spent on sending 5 gallons of drinking water to Haiti. I was hoping to get numbers to give them a more clear picture of what their donation could buy.

I sence that you are doubtful about the benevolence of humanitarian organizations such as the red cross. Please dont be so skeptical. They do good work. Even if 1/2 of the money raised goes to buy limozines for its Ceo(which I doubt) The organization is still very effective. Skepicism can be directed in many better directions than to those who do good. Why do we have to shine a microscope on every penny that these organizations spend. Yes…I am sure there is some curruption there. There is curruption everywhere. I heard Santa Claus wears womens underwear. But do I criticize him for it? Hell no. The guy does good work!

If I start a non profit organization that gives money for worthy causes would I be considered an executive? How would I make an income for myself from creating and running a non profit?

A nonprofit is "owned" by its board of directors. They are volunteers and receive no pay. They appoint an executive director and decide on his or her salary. That person runs the organization and reports to the board.

If you want to start a nonprofit, then you need to get a very impassioned group of people together who support your idea and will provide some start up funding and serve on the board of directors and would want to hire you as executive director. You need to get letters of endorsement from existing organizations saying this program is needed, you need to have data that shows your target group is in need whatever service it is that you want to provide and that they are not served otherwise, and you need to have a draft of what your first year’s budget would look like (what expenses you expect to incur, what you expect to pay staff, etc.). You also need to define the mission of the organization — whom would it serve? How? Why?

This may not make much sense, so I’ll explain. I do basic webpage designing as a hobby, and I wanted to put my skills to use by designing a basic webpage for a charitable organization. My skills are pretty basic. But I don’t want to have to pay for the domain or anything like that. Is there an online service or anything where I can get in touch with a genuine charity that could use my help?

that is sooooo sweet!
basic is better that none!
make good use of it and be proud!
go girl!

Secretary Napolitano Announces Humanitarian Parole Policy for Certain Haitian Orphans
Fact Sheet

On Jan. 18, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano, in coordination with the U.S. Department of State (DOS), today announced a humanitarian parole policy allowing orphaned children from Haiti to enter the United States temporarily on an individual basis to ensure that they receive the care they need—as part of the U.S. government’s ongoing support of international recovery efforts after last week’s earthquake.

DHS and DOS are working together to issue travel documents (either immigrant visas or humanitarian parole authorizations) for children who fall into the two categories described below. Once these children are cleared to travel, the U.S. Embassy in Port au Prince will facilitate their evacuation to the United States so they may be united with their American adoptive parents.

Under applicable laws, unaccompanied minors entering the country without a parent or legal guardian are subject to special procedures regarding their custody and care. DHS coordinates with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Refugee Resettlement on the cases of these unaccompanied minors.

All cases will be evaluated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Depending on their circumstances, and information available some children will receive immigrant visas with permanent immigration status and will require no further processing. Those who enter under humanitarian parole status will need to have their immigration status resolved after arrival.

Eligibility for Humanitarian Parole
Category 1
Children who have been legally confirmed as orphans eligible for intercountry adoption by the Government of Haiti, were in the process of being adopted by Americans prior to Jan. 12, 2010 and meet the below criteria.

Required Criteria

Evidence of availability for adoption, which MUST include at least one of the following:
Full and final Haitian adoption decree
Government of Haiti Custody grant to prospective adoptive parents for emigration and adoption
Secondary evidence in lieu of the above.
Evidence of suitability for adoption, which MUST include at least one of the following:
Notice of Approval of Form I-600A, Application for Advance Processing of an Orphan Petition
Current FBI Fingerprints and background security check clearances
Physical custody in Haiti plus a security background check
Category 2

Children who have been identified by an adoption service provider or facilitator as eligible for intercountry adoption, were matched to prospective American adoptive parents prior to Jan. 12, 2010 and meet the below criteria.

Required Criteria

Significant evidence of a relationship between the prospective adoptive parents and the child AND of the parents’ intention to complete the adoption, which could include the following:
Proof of travel by the prospective adoptive parents to Haiti to visit the child
Photos of the child and prospective adoptive parents together
An Adoption Service Provider “Acceptance of Referral” letter signed by the prospective adoptive parents
Documentary evidence that the prospective adoptive parents initiated the adoption process prior to Jan. 12, 2010 with intent to adopt the child (filed Form I-600A, Application for Advance Processing of an Orphan Petition, and/or Form I-600, Petition to Classify an Orphan as an Immediate Relative, completed a home study, located an ASP to work with in Haiti, etc.)
Evidence of the child’s availability for adoption, which could the following:
IBESR (Haitian Adoption Authority) approval
Documentation of legal relinquishment or award of custody to the Haitian orphanage
Secondary evidence in lieu of the above
Evidence of suitability for adoption, which MUST include at least one of the following:
Notice of Approval of Form I-600A, Application for Advance Processing of an Orphan Petition; OR
Current FBI Fingerprints and background security check clearances
Other Orphaned or Separated Children
Given the severity of the disaster in Haiti, we understand that there are additional children that have been orphaned and/or separated from relatives and may also be in varying stages of the adoption process. DHS and the U.S. Department of State continue to evaluate additional eligibility criteria and will provide additional information as soon as it is available.

USCIS encourages U.S. citizens with pending adoption cases in Haiti to send us detailed information about their cases to HaitianAdoptions@dhs.gov.

Please visit the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov and the U.S. Department of State website at www.adoption.state.gov for more information and updates.

My husband and I would like to adopt. We are foster parents and really want to adopt through the state. However, we would also like to adopt an infant. Of course, adoption is expensive. We can afford to care for our child/children, but we don’t have 20,000+ sitting around. Many people fundraise to make up for the difference, but many people I have discussed this with have not been very supportive of the idea. Do they think it is rude? (I am making items to sell and that type of thing. I don’t just expect people to give us money so we can adopt.)

Any thoughts? Also, has anyone else tried to fundraise for adoption?
Thanks for all the feedback so far. I’d love to hear more! By the way, I would never use the money for something else (as some mentioned in thier answer) although I am sure that people have done that in the past and are undoubtedly doing now. If we would end up not being able to adopt, for whatever reason, I would donate the money to an organization that provides grants to other families! I’m not expecting a surplus of money, but if there happens to be one, that is what I am going to do with it.

My wife and I made the decision when we got married that we would only expand our family through adoption. In 2004 we completed a Chinese adoption. We’re now over halfway through our 2nd Chinese adoption. The first time we did not do a lot of fundraising. This second time we have.

Here’s my advice.

First, be sure you want to face the public eye. I used any time I went out with my rubber ducks (yes, I purchased rubber duckies to sell as Duckies for Jenny) as an opportunity to talk to people about adopting as an option. I never hid the fact that I was pursuing a foreign adoption. This resulted in some resentment. I’ve endured a lot… "why adopt some foreign kid when there are plenty over here?" ((truth of the matter, our system favors younger parents.)) "adopting from China only encourages them to treat their girls with disrespect." ((their problem is centuries in the making; it was a cultural decision. Just the opposite occurs in India)) to probably the worst, being spit upon.

Because I took the effort to educate, I think our future daughter has made a big difference. Other families are considering it. Some families have begun collecting rubber ducks as a family building excercise. But, most of all, it has made me even more convicted in my belief that adoption is more than option, it should be held up as the first and foremost option. No child has to be raised without parents.

I’ve heard and seen a lot of different fund raising. Some people have asked for donations for an auction or big garage sale. Some people have asked for assistance from church groups. There’s no limit as to how you can do this.

However, as I said before. If you do it, make sure you are committed in your beliefs about adoption. After a woman spit on me for adopting a little orphan from China, it took me a few months to find the courage to go back out into public.

I had moments where I had to talk to people who were adopted domestically as to why I was doing so internationally. First, it was my age. Second, the Chinese have a system set up where an adoption is not a money pit. Third, I came to understand Chinese culture to the point where I could effectively tell people what would have happened to my little Wei-Wei if I hadn’t adopted her. By the age of seven the state would have chosen her profession. She wouldn’t have had the schooling most kids get. She wouldn’t be able to get married as she had no family and no dowry. She would basically be a second class citizen just because her parents went ahead and gave birth to her instead of having her killed during the pregnancy. They can usually argue with me all they want, but when my little daughter comes up to them and talks to them, they realize we made a big impact in a little girl’s life.

Good luck to you.
